500 Days
Today is a day I have been working towards for more than a year. My original inspiration for Unbreakable, outside of a desire to do some blogging as a way to keep my brain active, was Rembert Browne’s 500 Days Asunder. He had started 500 Days Asunder as a way to restart writing. Rembert only made it until December 9th of his first year posting. He was hired away to write for Grantland, the site he has called home to this day.
I challenged myself early in 2014 to see how long I could write articles in a row without missing a day. By the time I started approaching 100 I decided that I was really going to commit to the project. I wanted to reach the goal that Rem had originally set out for. Today, happily, I can report that I did that.
Truly it is Rem who deserves a great deal of credit. His writing was one of the things that made me want to try it myself. To get better at it. I have, probably, improved as a writer thanks to this project. I just wanted to see the 500 mark fall. That’s what I’ve wanted for the entire time I have been cranking out articles for the site.
Now, one immediate impulse could be to finish up and sign off. I have written a lot in the past 17 months. Enough that I have struggled for original topics for quite some time. It’s hard to find time in the day to produce something (hopefully) interesting or (probably not all that) funny day in and day out. I brought it upon myself, and I want to keep doing that.
I’m a superstitious man by nature. In my time doing this site I have been happier and healthier than ever. It’s been tried, but the end results speak for themselves. When I first posted here I was in a leg cast. Now I’m not only knocking on wood vigorously while typing this, but coming very close to two years without a fracture. Unbreakable has become reality for 500 straight days.
So why not 1,000?
See you on September 26th, 2016.
