Boston Calling Weekend
By: Connor Lenahan
This weekend is one of the best of the summer for Boston as once again Boston Calling festival is back. Twice a year there is a three day festival on the plaza of Boston City Hall. This year sees bands like Tame Impala, Beck, My Morning Jacket, Run the Jewels (!!!), Vance Joy, TV on the Radio, Tenacious D (!!!!!!), and Pixies all play over three windy days. My girlfriend Laura and I were able to snag tickets to all three days of the festival through Boston University and spent all last night listening to live music while being hit with 20 MPH winds.
We did discover something last night: Beck is absolutely incredible. Seriously, I didn’t realize he was as big a rockstar as he is. He absolutely killed it. Now I’ve been singing “Loser” all day and listening to Guero in between. The best part of this festival, as always, is finding new music for the summer. Hell, I wrote about new music yesterday with my buddy Jean-Luc’s new album. Now I’ve got a bunch of alternative music running through my head. Bless you Boston Calling, this is the best way to spend a weekend.
One of my favorite concerts ever was Beck at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium during the Midnite Vultures tour…the man’s stamina and versatility amazed, and what a band! I’ve heard rumors that he’s performing “Debra” again on this tour…is this true? (Actually, what with the Pixies and the D playing too, I’m already pretty jealous!)
He did indeed play “Debra” last night! He did a double encore of “Debra” and “Where It’s At” that absolutely killed.
