Beasts of No Nation
By: Connor Lenahan
Last night I brought up the new movie Beasts of No Nation on the Unbreakable Podcast. It had dawned on me as I said this that I had never written about the movie for this site. That’s my bad, because this movie might be really, super good.
For one thing it has Idris Elba in the lead role. Elba is one of the best actors working today and this is a great showcase for his talents. On top of this Cary Joji Fukunaga is directing the film. Fukunaga would be best known for directing the entire first season of True Detective. He was in large part responsible for making that season as special as it was.
What’s especially notable about this movie is the release structure for it. It’s getting a limited release next month on October 16th. However, on the same day, it’ll go live on Netflix. That’s because Beasts of No Nation is Netflix’s maiden voyage into the crazy world of film production. Like they have with the Emmys, Netflix would like to crash the Oscars.
After seeing the trailer and hearing that Idris Elba is apparently fantastic from early screenings, Netflix might have to start getting it’s tux ready.
